Personal Financial Coaching FAQ

Get clear, straightforward answers so you can feel confident about investing in personal finance coaching.

Clarity for Your Journey

1. How does a financial coach differ from a financial advisor?
Financial coaching focuses primarily on financial education, everyday money decisions, and helping you develop stronger financial habits. We can work on areas such as spending, cash flow, debt, savings, credit, and financial goals.

I can also provide general education about investing and retirement, but I don't manage investments, recommend specific securities, or sell financial products.

2. Who can benefit from financial coaching?

Financial coaching can be helpful whether you're working through a financial challenge or simply want greater clarity and confidence about your money.

Clients may be looking to improve spending habits, pay down debt, build savings, prepare for a major purchase, navigate a life change, or simply make sure they're on the right financial track.

3. Do I need to be struggling financially to benefit from coaching?

Not at all. Financial coaching isn't only for people experiencing financial difficulties.

You may be doing many things well but still have questions about balancing competing priorities, preparing for a major expense, increasing savings, planning for the future, or making more informed financial decisions. Sometimes an objective review can help identify both what you're doing well and where there may be opportunities to improve.

4. What specific topics can we work on together?

Coaching can address a wide range of everyday financial decisions, including budgeting and spending, cash flow, emergency savings, debt reduction, credit, major purchases, retirement savings, and other financial goals.

The topics we focus on will depend on your particular financial situation, priorities, and goals.

5. What happens during the Complimentary Discovery Consultation?

The Complimentary Discovery Consultation is a pressure-free conversation about your financial situation, questions, and goals.

We'll discuss the areas where you may be looking for guidance or education, and I'll explain how financial coaching may be able to help. It's also an opportunity for both of us to determine whether working together would be a good fit.

6. What is the Centsibility™ Financial Assessment?

The Financial Assessment provides a comprehensive look at where you stand financially today.

We'll review areas such as income, housing costs, debt, savings, investments, and retirement contributions. I'll then evaluate key financial wellness measurements to identify areas of strength, potential concerns, and opportunities for improvement.

It's a good starting point if you want a better understanding of your current financial position before deciding whether ongoing coaching would be beneficial.

7. What if I complete the Financial Assessment and decide I want to continue with coaching?

If you complete a Financial Assessment and decide you'd like to continue into a coaching package, a portion of your Assessment fee can be applied toward the cost of that package.

The credit is available when you continue within 30 days of completing your Financial Assessment. Current credit amounts and package details are provided when you select your coaching option.

8. Do I need to commit to a coaching package?

No. A good place to start is with a Complimentary Discovery Consultation so we can discuss your financial situation, what you'd like help with, and whether coaching seems like a good fit.

Depending on your needs, you may choose a Financial Assessment, a coaching package, or another available coaching option. There's no obligation to purchase a coaching package following the consultation.

9. What happens during a typical coaching session?

Each session is centered around your financial situation and the goals we're working toward.

Depending on where you are in the coaching process, we may review your progress, examine spending or cash flow, work through a particular financial decision, address questions or roadblocks, and identify practical next steps.

The goal is to help you better understand your finances and make thoughtful, informed decisions moving forward.

10. Will you tell me what I should do with my money?

My role is to provide education, guidance, perspective, and practical tools to help you evaluate your options and make informed decisions.

We'll talk through the advantages, tradeoffs, and financial impact of different choices, but ultimately the decisions remain yours. The goal is to help you become more confident making those decisions for yourself.

11. Do you provide specific investment advice?

I can provide general education about investing, retirement accounts, and how different types of investments work, but I don't manage portfolios or recommend specific stocks, funds, or other securities.

When a situation calls for individualized investment, tax, legal, or other professional advice, I may suggest discussing it with an appropriately qualified professional.

12. What if we're a couple, but only one of us plans to attend the coaching sessions?

Situations like this can vary depending on whether we're reviewing individual or household finances and the type of coaching you're looking for.

We can discuss your particular situation during the Complimentary Discovery Consultation and determine an appropriate and fair pricing arrangement.

13. Q: How often will we meet?

The two Financial Assessment sessions are typically scheduled one to two weeks apart.

With ongoing coaching, we may allow more time between sessions so you have an opportunity to work on your goals and put the strategies we've discussed into practice.

We'll determine the timing of future sessions together based on your goals, progress, and the level of support that makes sense for you.

14. What can I expect to gain from financial coaching?

Every client's situation and goals are different, so there isn't a single guaranteed outcome.

The goal of coaching is to help you gain a clearer understanding of your finances, identify areas that may need attention, develop practical strategies, and build stronger financial decision-making skills.

Ultimately, I want you to feel better prepared to make financial decisions—not just during coaching, but as your financial life continues to change.

15. Do you receive compensation for referrals?

I may provide clients with contact information for independent financial professionals when additional services may be helpful. Clients are under no obligation to use these professionals and are encouraged to conduct their own research.

If a client chooses to engage a professional referred by me, I may receive a referral fee. Any such compensation will be clearly disclosed to the client by the independent financial professional.
